The Southeast section of Portland, Oregon is known as an industrial hub which is the source of thousands of Portland-area jobs. The area’s history is rooted in the “blue-collar” but has since evolved to include a variety of life. People from any number of backgrounds make Portland’s Southeast section home. The Hawthorne district of Southeast Portland, in particular, is known to attract a “hippie/radical crowd” and boasts several tiny shops that are “subculturally-oriented.” Also found in the section is the famed Mt. Tabor, a cinder cone volcano which is one of the more popular and scenic parks in Portland.
A few of the neighborhoods of Southeast Portland include:
Ardenwald-Johnson Creek- named for Arden M. Rockwood, son of the man who first platted the community.
Brentwood-Darlington- founded in 1974 as the Errol Heights Improvement Association.
Brooklyn- regarded as “among southeast Portland’s most desirable residential neighborhoods” today.
Buckman- called after the 19th century orchardist, city council and school board member, Cyrus Buckman.
Creston-Kenilworth- christened after the 1821 novel Kenilworth by Sir Walter Scott. Several of the neighborhood’s streets are also named after Scott novels.
Eastmoreland- home of several parks including Berkeley Park, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, and Eastmoreland Golf Course.
Foster-Powell- the construction of which is rumored to have “followed Portland’s original electric streetcar line in the 1890s.”
Hosford-Abernethy- wherein the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry can be found.
Kerns- known for 28th Avenue’s restaurant scene.
Laurelhurst- housing Music Millennium and the Laurelhurst Theater.
Montavilla- “Montavilla” is an abbreviation of “Mt. Tabor Villa.”
Mt. Scott-Arleta- containing the Mt. Scott Community Center.
